Here are the courses I took at Michigan State University to obtain my Master's Degree in Education

CEP 805: Learning Mathematics with Technology

Taken: Spring 2015

Instructors: Ralph Putnam and Eryn Stehr

I had a blast taking this class. It was very interactive and informative. During the course my classmates and I had to use find, engage, and critique math technologies that could benefit future students in learning math with technology inside and outside of the classroom. By the end of the course, I had created my own website of Math technlogies, both websites and apps, that I thought were great to use when practicing different math skills.

CEP 802: Developing Positive Attitudes towards Learning

Taken: Fall 2015

Instructor: Evelyn Oka

During this course, it was our job to assess ways to motivate children to learn. Not all students learn the same and sometimes necessary steps should be taken to guide the students to complete daily tasks and assignments in the classroom. Some teachers have students to create daily goals to complete, some offer rewards, other teachers may punish those that fail to finish anything. I learned that whatever route a teacher takes to motivate students to learn, it must be fair to all students regardless of any differences or diabilities.  As well as, the different options to complete tasks should be achieveable and based off the student's own abilities and skills.

EAD 830: Urban Education; Racial Achievement Gap

Taken: Spring 2016

Instructor: Terah Venzant Chambers

This course was very interesting. It causes you to think back beyond current times to the past when the achievement gap first started. By reflecting on how the achievement gap came to be and ways that people throughout the decades have tried to overcome it, gives hope that we can overcome the newest achievement gap in regards to educational technology in schools, disparities in school funding, and low test scores in math and reading for certain ethnic groups. We also had to reflect on our own selves as educators to see if our race impacted the way we teach and the way we view our students and their cultural backgrounds. We even read about schools that tried their own methods of providing health clinics, meals for families, and tutoring and family assisstance after school for the community surrounding the school in hopes of improving social, financial, and personal lives of the students.

TE 802: Reflect and Inquiry Teaching Practices I

Taken: Fall 2012

Field Instructor: Grace Vereen

This course was the start of my Student Teaching Internship at Detroit International Academy in a Fifth Grade Classroom. I was so happy to finally begin my teaching experience with having a class of my own (sort of). I started off being the teacher's assisstant by helping to grade papers, give assessments, suggest ideas and tips for assignments, and help with classroom mangagement. Slowly the teacher started to give me more duties throughout the school year until in January where I performed all the teacher duties for that particular class.

ED 870: Capstone Seminar

Taken: Summer 2016

Instructor: Matt Koehler along with Sarah Keenan, Spencer Greenhalgh, and Brittany Dillman

Even though this class was a lot of work, it was very fun to complete. Our duties were to create an online portfolio displaying personal and professional information about our career, past and present accomplishments, and written essays reflecting our thoughts for the goals we set during the road to obtaining our Master's Degree. I now have a professional website that I am proud to present to my employers, students, parents, staff, my family and friends.

TE 803: Professional Roles and Teaching Practices II

Taken: Spring 2013

Field Instructor: Grace Vereen

This course took place during the final months of my Student Teaching Internship at Detroit International Academy. Throughout January 2013 - April 2013, I had the pleasure of performing Lead Teacher duties. I created lesson plans for all core subjets, instructed the class all day, used the feedback from assessments to guide my instruction practices for the next week, and communicated with parents. students. and staff daily. My internship was a rewarding experience that allowed me to grow as an educator.

ED 800: Educational Inquiry

Taken: Spring 2015

Instructor: Steven Weiland

In this course, I was engaged in weekly dialogues about influentual people that positively influened social, politicial, and educational views years after their time. Some of the influentual people we studied were John Dewey, Jane Addams, and Margaret Bancoft. It was a joy to read the biographies of past and present educators that had a heart to discover ways to teach children based soley on children's needs. We also looked for ways to teach children through online literacies without leaving the classroom. Some of the literacies I found to be effective for instruction were online museums, cable learning channels offered onliine (History and Discovery Channels), youtube, and teachertube.

TE 842: Elementary Reading Assessment and Instruction

Taken: Fall 2015

Instructor: Amy Croel-Perrien

I was able to learn different ways to assess students in literacy. This course teaches you to assess students appropiately based on age, grade-level, learning stage/style, and by school subject. After giving the assessment, it is important for teachers to meet with students to give informative feedback on successes and possible areas needed for improvement. When creating assessments, teachers should asks themselves if the questions asked require the students to display how well they learned what was taught in class, does the assessment accomodate all learners, is the assessment summative or formative, and etc.

TE 846: Accomadating Differences in Literacy Learners

Taken: Spring 2016

Instructor: Dongbo Zhang

Not all learners are the same. Everyone learns in stages but some may reach a stage faster or slower than others. This course teaches educators to take into account ALL learners when teaching daily. Some students may have disabilites that impact learning, some students may need motivition, some students may learn better by hands-on experiences than sitting at a desk for and listening to lectures. No matter how a student learns, teachers should give every student the chance to reach the learning target of the day by providing instruction that accomodates everyone.

TE 855: Teaching School Mathematics

Taking: Fall 2016

Instructor: TBA (To Be Announced)

I have not taken my last course as of yet since it does not start until the Fall 2016 Semester. I chose this course with hopes of inproving the way I teach math to my students. Between the time that I was in Elementary School and now, I have noticed there are new ways to teach old mathematical concepts. I am not ashamed to say that I am so used to teaching the way I learned math when I was younger, that I shut down the new and improved ways. Well by taking this class, I am open to new ideas and ways to teach math to the students of the future.
